I love my Stained Glass and Mosaic Arts Hobby

When I was still very young, my mother taught me the needle arts, and encouraged me to draw and write. Not only was I always an avid reader, but I also loved to knit, crochet and embroider. Any spare moments and most evenings spent at home had me working or drawing. I was always busy doing something.

You could say I was a crafty, creative kid. This carried through to adulthood and creating something still drives me today. I’ve mostly stopped the needlework and only once in a while get out the needles, and then mostly to prove that I still have the ability to produce a lovely shawl or make a gift for someone.

In my 30’s I discovered stained glass and sought the ability to create it myself. This was my artistic release for many years. I made several delightful projects, bought all the equipment, and made presents for everyone. I came up with some really beautiful pieces and gave them all as gifts.

Well, you’ve already read my story "Get Over Yourself and Deliver the Encore", linked below, and it was not ever going to happen. I totally missed the boat on becoming a successful income-producing mosaic artist.

This did not stop me from developing my hobby into a gratifying level of personal achievement, however. I created a lovely kitchen floor, backsplash and counter that I personally thought was stunning work. I laid the ceramic tile myself. Around the tiles I fashioned a beautiful mosaic border with several inlaid medallions. The backsplash and counter top picked up the mosaic design as well. I painted the cabinet doors in complimentary colors and painted a delightful morning glory vine and hummingbird theme. The kitchen became an incredible showpiece and, I believe to this day, that it was primarily the kitchen and the wall art throughout other areas of my house that sold it so readily.

Just for fun, I also dabble in other crafty hobbies. Both Shawna, my granddaughter, and I love working with polymer clays and are getting rather adept, especially Shawna. We work with rubber stamps, watercolors, paper crafts and make some interesting greeting cards. I’ve got the bad habit of knowing a special occasion is coming up and, on the last day, getting ready to make a special card. It cannot be just a simple card, it has to be creative, designed well and special and I’m into another all-nighter.

Now I have the website gobbling up huge blocks of time. I find it hard to explain the hours I put in because it really doesn’t seem possible. But time goes and I’m at the computer the whole while adding product, tweaking this, changing that, or SEOing that. I get “Can you tear yourself away from the computer to come eat?” Hello, I’m not playing – I’m really at work here. So it goes.

Right now I’m in the process of working on an oversized coffee table. If I get it done as I'm planning in my mind, this table might be one of my prettiest works yet. The way I’m going though, it might take me a while.

Thank you Hilda. I can fiddle all day with those little glass pieces. I always liked jigsaw puzzles so it's natural I guess to like mosaics too. Thanks for commenting.
