No one day in my life evokes the overload of memories as does September 11,
2001. I might even say that for me, personally, this day signifies both everything that is evil as well as all that is noble in humankind.Early that Tuesday morning I was busily engaged in a mosaic project and the Carol Duvall TV show was on in the background; I loved the diversity of crafting talents she featured on a daily basis. My phone rang, and I remember my agitation of having the interruption at that particular moment.
On the other end of that telephone call was a long-time friend, asking me, “Heidi, Is your television on.” I chuckled at that and told her, “Yep. You know me – It’s Carol Duvall time.” With that I hoped our conversation would be brief. I consider phones a sort of weapon of torture, an interruption – actually. This time, however, I stopped short of hurrying out of the call quickly because my caller said, “Put it on the news. Do it. Hurry.” She never spoke that abruptly, or with the intonations I could hear in her voice. I clicked on Fox News. From that very moment on, my life was changed, somehow.
As I clicked on the news, I saw the fireball in one building of the World Trade Center. With words literally tumbling out of her mouth, and her speech pattern vastly different than normal, my friend filled me in on what she knew thus far – and it was seriously horrendous.
All of the rest of that day I either spent on the telephone with this individual, or I sat watching the television in utter disbelief. I experienced the devastating emotions like everybody.
One thing is for sure, though, I never want to experience these feelings again on another day. My only words, even now, to associate with September 11 is horror, disbelief and infamy.
Our nation watched an ungodly number of innocent men and women die that dreadful day in a way that is unfathomable to me. No one deserves such a death and man’s brilliant mind should simply not be capable of doing such destructive, reprehensible and appalling acts to others.

Despite the lasting images of death and destruction of September 11, and despite the horrendous action of the terrorists and their supporters, this day also illustrates the magnificence that is possible by individuals and a nation.
Long live our beautiful America!

Top-level comments on this article: (2 total)I declined from writing about this topic as many others have. Reason being for me is that that horrible event has secrets I care not to discuss and I am disgusted as you.
Only life that doesnt believe in life itself is capable of such dispicable behaviour. And they know who they are and spiritually they are headed on a downward path to their own nightmare if you know what I mean.
There is a lot of scary in our journeys we see and live through but hang on to beautiful beliefs just the same that life is wonderful and magical in all its shapes, behaviours and even meanness.
The one who takes life however doesnt believe in life, life like that I do not believe in as they live in a lie and their own cruelty.
Great article
KellieSuch inhumanity speaks of unmitigated evil. I don't understand the kind of thinking that breeds these cruel, soul-devoid individuals and some of their fellow countrymen and worse, to do these kinds of deeds in the guise of religion, any religion. I do understand what you mean Kellie. When I decided to write this article, I decided not to further elaborate on the horrors of the terrorists only to mention that there was both insane evil and incredible heroics on that day. For a brief time, it unified our country like nothing before or after that I personally experienced. If only we could all learn from this.
Thanks very much for reading and commenting.
Excellent article, and I think you were true to the assignment. This begs certain people to declare "I don't care about innocent people dying because I have a viewpoint." Of course this is not true of people, that they don't care, its just that they did not lose a loved one, and now everyone is just left with their viewpoint.
That's why this writing assignment is kind of "loaded". Good job!
Christofer, You always have such a right-on perspective. I'd like very much to think that I remained on target. I deeply care and am very affected. In a way, I think differently as I observe everything around me from scenery to the people. I also gave this assignment a whole lot of thought. I did not want to revisit all that is so dreadfully awful about the day. I'd rather look for the better - the indomitable spirit in fellow citizens. Thanks for commenting!
