I originally received the basis for this story in my email. It touched me deeply. For sure I am always attracted to heartwarming stories, and I think this is one. Then, too, I want to believe that life doesn’t just end for cherished pets.

God’s response to the child’s letter is beyond ingratiating, and yes, I do know this is a tale. I think that miracles do, indeed, happen. And while I see many ugly things going on in the world, I must always remember that there is more goodness than ever.

I have paraphrased the story below:

A young family’s old Labrador, Sammy, had to be humanely euthanized recently. Aged 14, Sammy was the beloved pet for all those years, and she was sorely missed, especially by the young daughter, Britney. The child was only seven and Sammy had been part of her life as long as she could remember. She wept for her and really missed the dog.

After a couple of days, Britney asked her Mom if together they could send a letter to God. She wanted to tell God about Sammy so he could recognize her when she arrived in heaven.

Britney came up with these words:

“Dear God,

“Will you please take care of my dog?” … She is with you in heaven and I miss her so much. “I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

“I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

“Love, Britney”

Together, Britney and her Mom addressed an envelope to “God in Heaven,” selected a photo and included it with the letter. Britney lettered her return address on the envelope and pasted quite a few postage stamps on it. “I have to get this all the way to heaven and that’s so far away. It’ll take a lot of stamps.” On that afternoon, Mom and daughter mailed the letter.

Several days went by and Britney wondered whether her letter had already been received in heaven.

One day, it arrived – a gold-wrapped package. The little box was addressed to “Britney.”

The writing on the package was unfamiliar to the mother. She and Britney opened it to find Mr. Rogers’ book, “When a Pet Dies.” There was also a note addressed to Britney:

“Dear Britney,

Sammy arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away. Sammy isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart …

“Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

“Love, God.”

I know I’m a pushover for touching stories – this is one of them. It conveys copyright clipart-heaven-dot-com Mother and Childmany things to my thinking, all of which I like. I can believe that a tiny miracle happened and God did respond, or I can believe that a kindhearted person somewhere responded in a wonderful way to the little girl, or I can believe that the mother herself answered the letter. When this story is all said and done, God is wherever there is love!
