Maine is a state for the outdoorsman. It’s so much more too. If you have been fortunate to travel in the State of Maine, then you already know it is ocean front, rustic, totally New England, scenic, has great summer and winter activities and great shopping districts, too. In fact, who hasn’t heard of shopping the outlets in Maine.

This article is not my version of a travel ad for Maine. I’d like to think of it more like a wonderful memory of some delightful times spent exploring what Maine has to offer. I’ve been there countless times with family or friends, shopping, vacationing or sightseeing. It’s about two hours from our house to Kittery and it’s great fun to take a run to the outlets or to grab a wonderful meal of fresh seafood at the York Restaurant in close proximity to Nubble Lighthouse.
Then there is summer in Maine. A great variety of activities are found throughout the state. Head to the beaches, take a trip to lighthouses, head to a pristine lake or go sailing, hiking, horseback riding or golfing. Maine has fabulous art galleries and is one of the better areas for antiquing. Throughout the summer, there are countless music festivals, craft shows, art exhibits, clambakes and terrific dining. Many localities put on fireworks, run water parks and there are locations for whitewater rafting. Maine itself is a lovely state, and it is enjoyable to explore along the beaches and in state parks and find fresh water lakes.
Spectacular foliage welcomes the visitors in autumn. Drive along the rocky, craggy oceanfront and stop on a whim to walk and rock climb. County fairs are still in full swing, harvest festivals deliver Maine’s bountiful rural traditions, and food shows and wine tasting at local wineries welcome everyone. Participate in a lobster fest in autumn when lobsters are at their ultimate best. Bring an ATV or
rent one, hike and bike and tour to your heart’s content while enjoying fresh breezes and delightfully clean air. Now is even a better time to shop till you drop, and get a head start on the holiday season.Winter in Maine is a season unto itself. Snow lovers can find the most delightful bed and breakfasts with fabulous amenities, close to the action of anything snow, but be removed enough to enjoy the quiet and peacefulness of Maine. Mountain resorts offer immense skiing trails for expert skiers or “wanna be” skiers. Cross-country skiing is perhaps better than anywhere else. Go snowshoeing, ice fishing, skating, sledding and make snow angels. Again there are the restaurants, oh the award-winning seafood serving restaurants! Stay over for a few days, relax in quietude, get your second wind away from the grind and make memories.
For a few days, make the most of your time in Maine. Take it easy and find the magical moments that are yours if you go with family.
I vote Maine for lots of reasons. Perhaps best of all is the quality time to be had, the fun and incredible natural beauty everywhere, even in the people themselves.

Top-level comments on this article: (2 total)Maine should hire you as their tourism spokesperson. Sounds so good I just may go there next year.I like Maine - a lot! It's close to us and gives us a fab day trip. With CT being as small as it is and being so close by driving, we go there a lot. We also go to New Hampshire very frequently - no sales tax. Makes it a great place to shop. :)
It is like - not really a part of New England, but it IS New England. Actually Canada, but no one will really put it that way. It's a nation unto itself, but only a couple people live there in the South. The towns in Maine in the South look down on the North, yet the total population is so small, it is not worthy of discrimination claims. I tell you, it is so much larger than you think its going to be after going through the itty bitty states of Ma, NH and VT. I have lots of relatives that live there, they are just hard to find. I love Maine. These are great observations about Maine. I've never gone way way up north except to Acadia - I absolutely loved Acadia and hiking and rock climbing and finding boueys. I'm busy writing about Maine because it's lobster season right now. Foliage too. After that, when the snow flies, others can enjoy it better than me. However, there's nothing quite as lovely as picture taking after a fresh snowfall in Maine.
